About

Welcome to ZapKerPow! Of course you, the humble listener, are probably wondering what ZapKerPow is all about. Simply put, it's a virtual audio corkboard consisting of user input and assorted features assembled on a "real-time" basis by your phone jockies: Dmitri Baughman, Ned Flanders, and Mike the Janitor.

Suggested usage is to call and listen to the weekly mix on our 21st century, computerized telephone system at 206-985-4170. Once your mind has been stirred, submit your own creative input for possible inclusion in the mix!

Get On the Air!

Not every message you leave will make the cut but you can increase your chances by following these submission guidelines:

  • NO screaming
  • NO snot-nosed, whiney youngsters
  • NO Touch-Tone telephone tunes
  • NO advertising for commercial ventures - go buy some banner ads instead
  • NO commercial audio recordings including music, clips from the Jerky Boys, Dr. Demento, Howard Stern, or Crank Yankers, TV programming audio, or other familiar audio clips

  • YES we welcome indie-music! Your band's tunes will be considered as long as you tell us a little about your band and the piece you're submitting. We'll probably end-up with a regular "featured band" segment if demand is high, so feel free to send in your original works.
  • YES: creativity
  • YES: originality
  • YES: commentary
  • YES: weirdness
  • YES: vulgarity
  • YES: tastelessness
  • YES: criticism
  • YES: insults
  • YES ...this is a liberal domain!
Remember: call as often as you wish and leave as much input as you feel is of merit. Please spread the word so that we may have a virtual plethora of diverse material to choose from and thus we will be able to provide quality programming.

For your convenience, we have advertising kits available that include sample flyers ready for photocopying, stickers, and other assorted goodies. To receive your kit visit the stuff page.

a Brief History

It all started with a phone line and an answering machine back in 1992. While listening to the audio stream, you'll notice several references to Salt Lake City, UT in some earlier segments - land of caffeine-free Coke, Jell-O salads, and Mormons. What better way to skirt the mainstream way of life in the valley than with a "virtual audio corkboard" of sorts - a way to get the word out that life beyond the church down the street was a mere phone call away? Apparantly, others agreed, as a lively community known as "The Darker Side" was born.

It would never have been possible without the help and support from these friends:

Tim Pehrson (aka Wally Clinkenpeel)
Wade Kirkpatrick (aka Ned Flanders)
Mike Millen (aka Mike the Janitor)
Laurie Lohman (aka Chloe Devereaux)
Jeremy Camp (aka Arthur Dent)
Dave (aka Grue)
Richard Gates (aka Cardo)

...and of course, all the original callers to Salt Lake's "Darker Side" line.
